UNDERGROUND & RER
The Metro is definitely the quickest and least troublesome way to cross the city. Within the city there is one standard fare for the RATP and RER networks, no matter how far your journey or how many changes of line you make.
Most lines are open front 5.30am to 0.30am. At the moment the price of a tic¬ket is 7.50FF but it is better to buy a "carnet" of 10 tickets for 44FF There are various other travel cards that can be used on the RER, bis and Metro :
• "Formule 1" : The prices range from 40-100FF depending on which zones you choose, this card allows you unlimited travel on the metro, RER, SNCF trains, bus and even the Montmarte cablecar.
• "Paris Visite" : Valid for 3, 4 or 5 days with the sanie conditions as above but also allowing reductions of 20-35 % on the capital's tourist sites. Prices : Zones 1, 2 ,3 : 70FF (2 days), 105FF (3 days), 165FF (5days). Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 : 170FF (2 days), 230FF (3 days), 315FF (5 days). N.B.: You must keep your tickets and papers on you as there are often checks.

BY Bus
The bus network is one of the most pleasant ways to travel around the city enabling you to discover the charms of the Parisian roads and monuments. The tickets are the same as for the metro. In general buses run from 7.30am to 8.30pm. However soute lines run until 0.30am. There is also a special tourist line " Balabus". You will tour the main sites in about 75 mins. This line is open April-September from 12.30pm- 8pm.

BY TAXI
It is very easy to find any one of the 15 000 taxis which cruise around Paris. You can tell that a taxi is free if the sign is lit up and can either hail it in the street or get in at one of the 500 taxi stations.
There are three different fares which take into account the tinne spent and dis¬tance covered : Fare A, applicable in the daytime 7am- 7pm, Fare B, appli¬cable at night and lastly Fare C applicable at night outside the city. There are also extra charges if you are picked up outside a station or airport, if yon have luggage or an animal. It is usual to leave au tip if you were satisfied with the service.

BY BOAT

The batobus is a pleasant way to cross Paris. By travelling down the Seine you avoid the hassle of the city's traffic. It runs April-September and has 5 stops : Tour Eiffel. Muée d'Orsay, Pont des Arts/Musée du Louvre, Notre-Dame and Hotel de Ville. It costs 12FF for each stage with the possibility of buying a tic¬ket for the whole trip for 60F.

BY TRAIN
There are 6 stations in Paris : gares du Nord de l'Est„ Saint Lazare (towards the North West), Montparnasse (towards the West), Austerlitz (towards the South West), Lyon (towards the South). Information on the national lines : 45 82 50 50 and on the suburban lines: 45 65 60 00 or Minitel 3615 SNCF.

BY CAR
After watching the Parisians drive you will be surprised to hear that there is a speed limit of 50 km/h in the city and 80 km/h on the ring road! All pas¬sengers must wear a seat belt.
Generally speaking you pay for parking and it is limited to two hours except in quiet streets. In Paris cars parked where they should not be are often towed away. Find out at the car pound or your local police station. Car Pound (Fourrière automobile) : Tel.: 45 31 14 80.
