Mahajanga (Majunga)
Renowned for the therapeutic quality
of its dry, warm climate, Majunga is a large port situated
on the Mozambique Channel in the north west of Madagascar,
facing the Comoro Islands and Africa.
The second largest port on the island, it benefits from
a variety of architectural styles, including Arabic,
colonial and Indian. The town is home to, among others,
the Karanes (“accountants”), a group of
extremely industrious tradesmen and women. The port
is also a staging post on the journey to the idyllic
archipelagos of the north west.
